A fast food restaurant in Walthamstow has been forced to shut down after hygiene inspectors found gruesome discoveries on the premises, including mouldy black pudding, green bacon and mouse AND rat droppings.

Following up on a complaint from a customer that a rat was seen in the toilets, an inspector from Waltham Forest council entered Hamburger Grill in Walthamstow High Street and immediately noticed that the kitchen was filthy and thick with grease.

They soon found mouse droppings on a shelf where food was stored, next to plates that customers would have eaten from. The mice had also helped themselves to packets of nuts and dried fruit.

There were rat and mouse droppings found in the rear food store and a large rat hole was found in a cupboard.

Mouldy food was rife throughout the premises. Black pudding had been left to rot and jars of pickled beetroot and gherkins were found covered in mould. The inspector also found green, sprouting potatoes and a packet of bacon that had turned green.

All of the food containers in Hamburger Grill were greasy and encrusted with food.

The building was so cluttered that it would have been impossible to clean and he rear garden was a mess, and bread and bird seed littered the yard area.

Due to the serious risk to the public, the inspector served a Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Notice on the premises, which requires it to close immediately. A Hygiene Emergency Prohibition order was then ordered at Stratford Magistrates Court on 17 June, so Hamburger Grill will remain closed until inspectors are satisfied that the issues have been addressed.

Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Environment Clr Clyde Loakes said: The list of hygiene breaches found in this restaurant was truly stomach churning. They may be selling fast food, but not taking time to keep the premises clean is a real crime. We’ll always act on concerns raised by our residents and I’m glad that this restaurant will be staying closed until they get their act together.”
